The Iraqi Embassy in Washington emphasized that Iraq is a fully sovereign state with the right to conclude agreements and memoranda of understanding in accordance with its constitution and national laws, and in line with its supreme interests.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Iraq underscored that all Iraqi decisions stem from its independent national will and that Baghdad is not subordinate to the policy of any other state.

The embassy issued the clarification via its official account on X, in response to remarks by the US State Department spokesperson, who expressed Washington’s rejection of the recently signed security memorandum between Iraq and Iran.
Balanced foreign relations
According to the statement, Iraq maintains friendly and cooperative relations with numerous countries around the world, including its geographical neighbors and the United States, based on mutual respect and shared interests.

The embassy noted that the security agreement with Iran was signed to enhance bilateral cooperation in safeguarding security and controlling the shared borders, thereby contributing to the stability and security of both countries and the wider region.
Details of the security memorandum
On Monday, Iraq and Iran signed a joint security memorandum during the visit of Ali Larijani, Secretary-General of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, to Baghdad. The agreement focuses on security coordination along the shared border, aiming to bolster border security and prevent cross-border threats.
