President: Iran Ready for Cooperation with Regional States in War on Terrorism

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani underlined his country’s preparedness to broaden its anti-terrorism efforts in cooperation with the regional states.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to cooperate with the regional countries, including Pakistan, in campaign against terrorism and development of peace, stability and security in the region,” Rouhani said in a meeting with Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif in Tehran on Monday.

He stressed that the problems in the region, including Afghanistan, can be solved through regional solutions and not by the trans-regional powers.

Asif, for his part, underscored that the regional issues cannot be settled through military action, and said, “Resolving the regional countries’ problems needs regional solutions, specially with Iran’s partnership, and measures by the powers outside the region is not helpful.”

In relevant remarks last month, President Rouhani underscored the necessity for further cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad in fighting the terrorist groups.

“Iran and Pakistan can have good consultations and cooperation in the war on terrorism and developing regional security,” President Rouhani said in a meeting with Chairman of Pakistan’s Senate Reza Rabbani in Tehran.

He called terrorism as the largest problem in the region, and said the regional states should cooperate in fighting and annihilating the terrorist groups.

Noting that Iran and Pakistan are the strategic depth of each other, Rouhani said that development and progress of both countries is an important element to increase the regional security.

Rabbani, for his part, stressed the need for anti-terrorism cooperation with Iran, and said his country deems as necessary enhancement of security at common borders.
