Bahrain revolt detrimental to PG

ali_laree_janiIranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani has warned against foreign military invasion of Bahrain, saying the “tragic occurrence” will exacerbate the situation in the Persian Gulf state.

Saudi Arabia along with other Persian Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman, have sent troops to  Bahrain to help quell a revolution against the monarchy in the crisis-hit country.

“The entering of foreign forces into Bahrain will complicate the situation in the (Middle East) region and make it difficult to find a solution to the ongoing crisis in the country,” Majlis news agency (ICANA) quoted Larijani as saying in a Wednesday meeting with Turkish Ambassador to Tehran Umit Yardim.

Larijani described the move as “detrimental” to the region and added, “Foreign troops are committing a bigger crime as they are involved in the crackdown against Bahraini people.”

He also stressed the importance of holding constant discussions between Tehran and Ankara with regard to the ongoing developments in the region.

The top Iranian parliamentarian noted that the two countries enjoy great potentials to improve amicable relations in different fields, stressing, “Such potentials should be fulfilled in line with common interests.”

The Turkish ambassador, for his part, highlighted the significance of expanding ties between Iran and Turkey and said parliamentary cooperation would play a key role in this regard.

Anti-government protesters in Bahrain have been demanding the ouster of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa as well as constitutional reforms, with hundreds camping out peacefully in the capital’s Pearl Square since February 14th.

Bahrain’s government is continuing its military crackdown on anti-government protesters that demand the downfall of decades-long regime of al-Khalifa family.

On Wednesday, at least six people were reportedly killed in the Bahraini capital city of Manama during attacks by Saudi and Bahraini forces against the anti-government protesters.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has blasted foreign military invasion of Bahrain, holding the US accountable for the move.

“This military invasion was a foul and doomed experience. Regional nations hold the US government answerable for such a heinous behavior,” President Ahmadinejad told reporters following a cabinet session.
