Strait of Hormuz Is an Inseparable Part of Iran’s Territorial Waters, Our Sovereignty Is an Established Right: Major General Yahya Safavi

Shiite News: Senior Adviser to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Major General Syed Yahya Safavi, has clarified in blunt terms that the Strait of Hormuz is an inseparable part of the territorial waters of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran’s sovereignty and control over this important area is not a political claim, but an established legal and geographical right.

Addressing an academic and specialized session held under the title “Geographical Requirements Influencing the Defensive Strategy of the Strait of Hormuz,” Major General Safavi said that Iran does not seek to create tensions in the region, but it possesses full strength in enforcing its right of sovereignty. He clarified that if this waterway is made a route for the transit of such military equipment that directly targets Iran’s national security, then regulating the transit and imposing restrictions on it is not only Iran’s right, but also the strategic responsibility of the armed forces.

Shedding light on the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, he rejected the assumption of alternative pipelines or routes. He emphasized that despite all efforts to create parallel routes, the world’s dependence on this passage is structural in nature, and in today’s volatile global market, its importance is far greater than in the past, because more than 20 percent of the world’s oil and energy transmission still passes through this global artery.

Clarifying the difference between closing the Strait of Hormuz and managing it, the Supreme Leader’s senior adviser reminded that Iran’s fundamental strategy is to wisely manage this waterway in the face of the cruel naval blockade imposed by America. He further said that the best management of this important passage is actually the path to ending naval restrictions and achieving regional sustainable peace and security through the partnership of the region’s countries.
