So-Called Snapback Mechanism Fails at Security Council; Resolution 2231 Has Expired, Iran Says

Shia News: Iran’s Mission to the United Nations has strongly reacted to the recent UN Security Council meeting, stating that the activation of the so-called “snapback” mechanism by three European countries is completely invalid. According to the Iranian mission, these countries had themselves failed to fully comply with their obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

The Iranian mission stated categorically that Resolution 2231 completed its designated period on October 18, 2025, after which all provisions and sanctions related to the nuclear issue had permanently expired. Therefore, it said, there is no longer any legal basis for the continued activities of the sanctions committee established in connection with Resolution 1737.

Iran stressed that the Security Council should not become a tool for pursuing political objectives or legitimizing unlawful actions, rather than fulfilling its responsibility to safeguard international peace and security.

It is worth noting that at the Security Council meeting held on September 10, 2026, 11 members supported the resolution, while Russia and China opposed it and Pakistan and Somalia abstained. As a result, the resolution failed to pass and the meeting ended without a decision.

The failure of the meeting was further highlighted by the fact that no representative of the UN Secretary-General attended and no report was presented, while Iran also did not participate in the meeting.
