IRGC announces martyrdom of Basij Commander Gholamreza Soleimani
The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the martyrdom of Major General Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij Mostazafan Organization, in a US-Israeli aggression.
The IRGC offered condolences to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Sayyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the people of Iran, members of the Basij, and the family of the martyred commander.
Martyr Soleimani served Iran for many years, from the Iran-Iraq War to the present day, and played a strategic role in developing Basij structures, supporting developmental initiatives, and assisting vulnerable and disadvantaged communities, the statement explained.
His assassination, the statement noted, highlights the critical role of the Basij in confronting Iran’s adversaries, particularly in recent aggressions.
The IRGC warned the US and “Israel” that the Basij’s fighters “will not leave the blood of the martyr unavenged” and vowed to continue the path of resistance against global arrogance and international Zionism.
The martyr’s blood, the IRGC affirmed, will only strengthen the resolve of the Iranian people and all Basij fighters in continuing the resistance path.
A journey of national service
Gholamreza Soleimani was born in 1964 in Farsan, in Iran’s Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province. His military background was shaped during the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988).
In 1981, Soleimani joined the frontlines near Shush as a teenage volunteer. During the war, he participated in major operations such as Tariq al-Quds, Fath al-Mobin, and Beit al-Moqaddas, serving in both combat and command roles. He then formally joined the IRGC in 1982.
After the war, he held several senior regional positions. In 2006, he became commander of the Saheb al-Zaman Corps in Isfahan, overseeing both Basij units and IRGC forces. He was promoted to brigadier general in 2017.
Martyr Soleimani holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Isfahan and pursued doctoral studies in Iranian-Islamic history.
In July 2019, he was appointed head of the Basij, a volunteer force under the IRGC established after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In this role, he has overseen its nationwide activities, including its involvement in preserving internal security.
