Bahrain’s main opposition party al-Wefaq National Islamic Society denounced the Al Khalifa ruling regime for restricting religious freedom and refusing to reconstruct the mosques it had demolished back in 2011.

In a statement on Friday, the al-Wefaq party took a swipe at the Manama regime for destroying a large number of mosques, saying at least 11 mosques ruined by the regime in 2011 have remained untouched ever since.

Denouncing the government’s attempts to wipe out the identity of those mosques, the statement said the regime’s refusal to reconstruct the ruined mosques reveals its policy of persecution and religious oppression.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.
