Fact Check: Allegation of anti-Pakistan slogans during MWM dharnas is false
Shiite News: A number of users on the micro-blogging platform ‘X’ shared a video which they claimed supporters of Majlis Wahdat Muslimeen (MWM) chanting anti-national slogans during a sit-in in Karachi.
Raised slogans, but those slogans were actually against America. After reviewing the video, the iVerify Pakistan team has declared it false.
Claim
In a video shared on X on January 2, some users claimed that supporters of Majlis Wahdat Muslimeen (MWM) raised anti-national slogans during a sit-in in Karachi.
Test procedure
The iVerify Pakistan team has investigated the video and determined that it is false.
A pro-PML-N account on X shared a video of the sit-in, in which the leader of the religious party were chanting slogans of death to US.
In the caption of this post, it was written that some time ago, a major political party and its leader were banned from chanting “Death to Pakistan”. What restrictions are imposed on them at that time or not?
The said post was seen by 76 thousand 500 people while the video was shared by users with the same caption. The video was shared not only on X but also on Facebook.
Comments on the post called for a ban on Majlis-e-Wahdat Muslimeen (MWM) and calling it a traitorous party. A fact-check was conducted in view of the fear of the video going viral and resulting in political and communal tensions.
Contrary to the claims that went viral after reviewing the video, the participants chanted ‘Death to America’ in response to the slogans of the MWM leader.
In the 35-second video, the leaders leading the sit-in and the participants were also heard saying ‘Amerika ka jo yaar hai ghaddar hai, ghaddar hai’, but no anti-Pakistan slogans or speeches were made.
Video Check Result: Misleading
Therefore, the claim that in this video MWM leaders and workers raised anti-Pakistan slogans during the sit-in at Numaish Chowrangi is false.
In the original video that went viral, slogans of “Death to America” were raised and there was no anti-Pakistan talk, the allegations were clearly an attempt to spread hatred against MWM.
