Rawalpindi commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha announced his resignation on Saturday after he took responsibility for allegedly rigging electoral results in the city.

Addressing a press conference at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Chattha said he “thought of committing suicide numerous times”.

However, he added that he instead decided to tell the nation “the truth”. “Why should I die in an unIslamic way?” he questioned.

“I urge the bureaucracy to not commit any sin just to make politicians win; who are wishing to become ministers,” said the commissioner.

He alleged that “we gave a 50,000 lead to candidates who had lost the elections”.

The commissioner called for being “hanged” for “committing fraud” in the Rawalpindi division.
