Failure to Condemn Attacks on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities Shows IAEA Double Standards, Says Behrouz Kamalvandi

Shiite News: Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman and Deputy Head for International Affairs of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), sharply criticized what he described as U.S. hostile policies and double standards by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) while addressing the agency’s 70th General Conference in Vienna. His remarks focused on the recent attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and Iran’s position on the future of its nuclear program.

Kamalvandi said that, under U.S. pressure, the host country had prevented AEOI chief Mohammad Eslami from attending the conference, describing the move as hostile and politically motivated. Recent reporting confirms that Eslami was prevented from attending after a travel-waiver request was denied following a U.S. objection.

Questioning what he called the agency’s double standards, Kamalvandi asked why attacks on Iraqi nuclear facilities had been condemned in the past while, in his view, much larger attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities had not received a similar condemnation. He called on the IAEA to clearly condemn military attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities in order to restore what he described as the agency’s credibility. Iranian reporting on his speech likewise says he criticized the IAEA for its response to attacks on Iranian nuclear sites.

He further argued that, given continuing military and security threats, protecting important facilities by relocating them to secure or underground sites is a natural security measure and should not automatically be interpreted as concealment. He said Iran’s sensitive nuclear facilities have remained subject to IAEA monitoring and inspections.

During his address, Kamalvandi also highlighted what he described as Iran’s achievements in peaceful nuclear technology, including electricity generation, nuclear medicine, agricultural applications and radiation technology. He cited the production of more than 80 billion kilowatt-hours of nuclear electricity and the availability of more than 76 radiopharmaceuticals to over 230 medical centers. The 80-billion-kWh figure has also been reported by Iranian officials in connection with the Bushehr nuclear power program.

He stressed that attacks on industrial and scientific centers would not, in his view, stop Iran’s technological development and said Iran would not surrender to external pressure. He concluded by repeating the slogan: “Nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapons for no one.”
