Discord between Iran, Arab neighbors among goals of US war: Lavrov

The war against Iran could trigger sweeping global repercussions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned, cautioning that the escalating confrontation threatens international stability and the global economy.

Speaking Thursday during a roundtable at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia in Moscow, Lavrov said the US-Israeli aggression against Iran is “fraught with massive consequences… for the entire world, for global stability, the global economy, and for everything previously known as globalization and the prosperity of humanity. All of that has been destroyed, and civilians are the ones suffering,” paying their condolences to the victims of the war on Iran.

Lavrov further noted that the true objectives of the war on Iran are still contended in the United States, saying, “I have no doubt that one of the goals was to sow discord among the countries of the region, between Iran and its Arab neighbors, after relations between them had in recent years — until recently — undergone a positive process of normalization.”

He said US-Iran talks had been close to success as recently as June, but accused Western powers of undermining diplomatic progress, and condemned their approach as “divide and incite in order to rule.”

Lavrov stressed that Moscow and its partners are working to prevent wider escalation in West Asia, consequently warning that NATO is being pulled into the confrontation, arguing that remarks by the alliance’s secretary-general suggest its interests “lie wherever it is told they lie.”

An Iranian Ministry of Intelligence source has also dismissed a recent report by The New York Times, which claimed that Iranian intelligence operatives indirectly contacted the CIA to discuss ending US-Israeli aggression against Iran.

Cited by Tasnim News Agency, the source described the report as “false” and a “psyop”, emphasizing that “Iran will not hesitate to continue disciplining the enemy.”

Separately, a source speaking to Al Mayadeen explained that pre-planned military programs and strategies determine fluctuations in the number of missiles Iran launches. The source added that Iran’s firepower infrastructure continues to develop steadily, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen military capabilities in line with established defense plans.
