Shiite News: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has publicly praised the Shia community for their peace-loving nature, discipline, and patriotism, recognizing their exemplary conduct during religious observances.
The remarks came during a meeting of Sunni scholars at the CM House in Lahore, convened to discuss tensions between Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and the Punjab government following recent violent incidents and casualties.
Addressing the clerics, Maryam Nawaz said:
“I may have political differences with any religious group, but you yourselves are witnesses to how massive Shia gatherings are during Muharram. Have you ever seen them holding spiked clubs or heard anyone from their pulpits call for violence or arson?”
She further said: “Tell me honestly, have you ever seen them blocking roads or attacking others? I have never heard of such behavior from them.”
Observers viewed her remarks as an open acknowledgment of the Shia community’s 1,400-year-old peaceful and organized tradition of Azadari-e-Imam Hussain (a.s.), where even under pressure and provocation, they never took the law into their own hands.
The Chief Minister’s statement recalled the Raja Bazaar Rawalpindi tragedy, where Takfiri extremists of a banned outfit staged a violent episode to blame the Shia mourners. Later, the DG ISPR revealed in a press conference that the incident was a pre-planned act of those same terrorists, confirming that Shia mourners neither harmed any Sunni citizens nor attacked any mosques.
