UN falls short of stopping Israel crimes against Palestinians: Iran

Iran says the UN Security Council (UNSC)’s failure to put an end to Israel’s acts of aggression has further emboldened the Tel Aviv regime in its crimes against the Palestinians.

The UNSC’s failure to fulfill its obligations has prompted the Israeli regime to intensify its brutalities against the defenseless Palestinian nation, Hossein Dehqani, the Iranian deputy ambassador to the UN, said on Thursday.

He particularly criticized the UN body for rejecting a resolution calling for the recognition of Palestinian statehood and an end to the Israeli occupation, saying the decision denied the Palestinians their right to justice and peace and deprived them of any chance to realize their cause.

The Israeli regime is yet to be brought to justice over its killing of more than 2,200 Palestinians, including women and children, and displacing thousands of others.

Dehqani, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), said that the organization expects the UNSC to take firm action to put an end to Israel’s decades-long occupation of the Palestinian lands.

In December 2014, the UNSC rejected a draft resolution demanding the recognition of an independent Palestinian state and the termination of the Israeli occupation.

Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, East al-Quds (Jerusalem), and the Gaza Strip. They also demand that Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories. Israel, however, has refused to return to the 1967 borders and is unwilling to discuss the issue of al-Quds.
